Mibbit Server Compromised
Last day i had posted about Mibbit Hack . The Mibbit had detected the unauthorized access to the server which runs their blog. The Mibbit had opened a new blog at Blogger .In response to this Mibbit shut it down and began investigating . Later today at around 8pm GMT Mibbit shutdown the IRC services after it became clear that several pieces of backed up data had been accessed maliciously from another server, tools.mibbit.com. Mibbit now know the data's included The personal information of 9 Mibbit operators including their names, accounts and e-mail addresses . A backup of nickserv data from April 2011 with up to 10,000 user nicknames and their credentials andTwo sets of backup data for one operator user account PMs and Channel logs, used for testing are Leaked. Currently Mibbit are working on securing and restoring the affected services. Mibbit are treating this as a significant and malicious attack on Mibbit services which impacts users and which has placed user data at risk. Mibbit are continuing to work to remedy this situation and bring back affected services online as quickly as possible. Mibbit asked apologies for the disruption, inconvenience and difficulty this attack has caused to you and your users. As Mibbit have updates about the attack, the backup data which was stolen from tools.mibbit and the next steps to recover services we will share it via the blog and the #help channel.

Facebook News Feed Gets An Upgrade And Its A Major One
Facebook has revamped its News feed to allow similar topic posts to appear in a single thread. Facebook engineer said,”We want to show you the most relevant and interesting information, and this test is designed to show you trends among what your friends are saying. ”
But wait, that’s not the major update. In fact its the additional brand tagging feature that is the icing on the cake. As seen below, users’ updates are clubbed together and a link to Harry Potter Page appears at the top right.
First noticed by Inside Facebook, the feature allows a greater engagement between users and brands and an opportunity for brands to appear right with News feeds – which by the way has become so difficult because of the ever changing Edgerank algorithm. Users can explicitly tag a Page or allow Facebook’s natural language processing to detect what users are talking about.
Facebook is also planning to allow unfiltered News stream – which means, Facebook will not determine what to show in user’s news stream.
As with any update there would be the initial backlash but this update is an important one for Facebook at a time when it is struggling to keep up with the demands of brands and advertisers.

Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg's sister to start own social media firm
NEW YORK: Facebook's director of marketing Randi Zuckerberg, sister of the social network's billionaire founder Mark Zuckerberg, is leaving her brother's company to start her own social media consulting firm.
Randi, who has been with Facebook for the last six years, said she feels it is the "perfect time" to move outside of Facebook to build a company focused on the "exciting trends underway in the media industry."
"I have decided my time at Facebook is coming to a close. When I think about the projects I am most proud of during my six years at the company, they all have one thing in common -- they revolve around the intersection of traditional media and social technology," she said.
Facebook confirmed the departure and in a statement said, "We can confirm Randi has decided to leave Facebook to start her own company. We are all grateful for her important service."
However, there was no direct comment from her brother. Randi plans to start her social media consulting firm 'RtoZ Media'.
"My goal is to launch my own innovative programming and work with media companies to develop their programming in new and more social ways. In attacking this challenge, Facebook will clearly be a central element in all of my projects," she said adding that she hopes to continue advising Facebook on media projects.
According to her resignation letter posted on the website 'AllThingsD', Randi said she has focussed on innovating and pushing the media industry forward by introducing new concepts around live, social, participatory viewing.
"We have made incredible progress, but there is still much to be done and other ways I can affect change."
A prominent name in Silicon Valley, Randi has been on maternity leave for the last three months. She was recently nominated for an Emmy award in the category of live coverage of a current news event for her work on 'Facebook Live', a real-time news show she created and hosted for the company.

Chinese hackers take on the world . Campaign hits 72 organisations
Insecurity experts at the anti-virus outfit McAfee said that they have discovered the world's biggest series of cyber attacks.The attacks have seen the infiltration of the networks of 72 organisations including the United Nations, governments and companies worldwide.McAfee believes that there was one "state actor" behind the attacks. It did not name it but it appears to be talking about China.What McAfee has discovered is a five-year campaign against the United States, Taiwan, India, South Korea, Vietnam and Canada; the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); the International Olympic Committee (IOC); the World Anti-Doping Agency; and shedloads of companies ranging from defence contractors to high-tech enterprises.
Hackers broke into the computer system of the UN Secretariat in Geneva in 2008, and hid there unnoticed for nearly two years. Shedloads of secret data wrtr sent to China before the attack was noticed.
McAfee's vice president of threat research, Dmitri Alperovitch, wrote in a 14-page report that he was stunned by the diversity of the victim organisations and taken aback by the audacity of the perpetrators.
It is not clear what is happening to all the data. Some of it might be being used to build better products or beat a competitor at a key negotiation. But the data loss represents a massive economic threat, Alperovitch warned.McAfee first found evidence of the hacking campaign in March, when its researchers discovered logs of the attacks while reviewing the contents of a "command and control" server that they had discovered in 2009.
The attacks have been dubbed "Operation Shady RAT", although we would have thought Chinese Takeaway would have been better. The earliest breaches date back to mid-2006, though there might have been other intrusions as yet undetected.
The longest attack was on the Olympic Committee of an unidentified Asian nation which lasted for 28 months, McAfee said.
Alperovitch told Reuters that this is the biggest transfer of wealth in terms of intellectual property in history. He said that the scale at which this is occurring is frightening. Jim Lewis, a cyber expert with the Center for Strategic and International Studies,said that it was likely that China was behind the campaign because some of the targets had information that would be of particular interest to Beijing.
While the US and Britain have capabilities to pull off this kind of campaign, they would not spy on each other.

Time to Replace LOIC _ Anonymous is Developing a New DDoS Tool
Anonymous is developing a new DDoS tool. So far, what they have is something that is platform neutral, leveraging JavaScript and vulnerabilities within SQL to create a devastating impact on the targeted website.
But will the tool last, and will it make law enforcement’s job harder in the long run?
Previously, Low Orbit Ion Canon (LOIC) was the go to weapon for Anonymous supporters during protests against dictators in North Africa, and Operation: Payback. However, LOIC is also the reason scores of people have been arrested in the last year, so many feel its time is at an end.
The new tool, called #RefRef, is set to be released in September, according to an Anon promoting it on IRC this afternoon. Developed with JavaScript, the tool is said to use the target site’s own processing power against itself.
In the end, the server succumbs to resource exhaustion due to #RefRef’s usage. An attack vector that has existed for some time, resource exhaustion is often skipped over by attackers who favor the brute force of a DDoS attack sourced from bots or tools such as LOIC.

A New Twitter Spam [ Beach Body ]
Thousands of hacked Twitter accounts are sending a wave of spammy messages advertising a weight-loss product.
The tweet is:
“Get the beach body you’ve always wanted, now you can with this weight loss supplement,”
followed by a link to a website advertising an Acai Berry dietary supplement.
Yet this is not cleared that how the accounts have been compromised, but judging by the number of spammy messages, it’s possible that users’ passwords have been stolen.
If you see such a message coming from your account, change your password immediately. You should also revoke Twitter access to all suspicious applications. You can do that by logging into Twitter, clicking on “Settings” in the upper-right drop-down menu, choosing “Connections” or “Applications” and clicking “Revoke Access” on suspicious apps

British Police Duped by LulzSec Into Arresting the Wrong Guy

The Daily Tech Website says that British Police Duped by LulzSec Into Arresting the Wrong Guy .If the arrested man was indeed LulzSec's Topiary, he couldn't have picked a much more perfect lair. Much like a James Bond villain, the alleged hacker was arrested on a remote island -- one of the Shetland Islands, off the north coast of Britain's mainland.
Police transported the 19-year-old suspect to central-London, for interrogation. Police say they're also searching for a 17-year-old related to the case in Lincolnshire, a Northeastern province of the mainland.
Police characterized the arrest as a "pre-planned, intelligence-led operation".
Topiary's Twitter account fell silent about a week ago, and many posts were deleted from it. The sole remaining post, dating to July 21, played Medger Ever's iconic quote "You can not kill an idea", stating, "You cannot arrest an idea."
To add to the picture, LulzSecurity's website has been down on and off for the last few weeks, being on life-support thanks to a CloudFlare cached copy.
Given these details and the UK government's insistence they had nabbed their man, the media jumped into a fervor. And the public gobbled it up, as they had long expected LulzSec's brass to be apprehended and redirected towards a local penitentiary.

The UK's police are desperate for some good press. Amid the resignation of London's police chief and allegations of bribery, the arrest could be a huge victory for the department. In recent years the police have been battered by a long string of embarrassments, including an invasive camera scheme, which failed to reduce crime rates.
A series of chat logs published by anti-LulzSec American "hacktivist", th3j35t3r ("The Jester") indicate, however, that the department may be enmeshed in another debacle.

If the above commentary is to be believed it sounds like the UK police has fallen hook line and sinker for LulzSec and Topiary's ploy. And so did the mass media [1][2].
Not the First Time the Police and Media Were Duped
Back on June 6, the internet lit up with reports of a LulzSec "arrest". Only, it turns out the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations appears to have been duped into arresting Robert Cavenaugh ("XYZ"), a ex-Anonymous youth who the group had doxed after he published private server logs from the group.
Anonymous had it out for Mr. Cavenaugh, and thus he made the perfect fall guy for them. And best of all he had nothing to do with LulzSec, ostensibly.
Not long after the arrest of "Chippy1337" (real name: Ryan Cleary), yet another supposed LulzSec "official" was reported. Mr. Cleary was also former Anonymous and had helped "XYZ" publish the server logs -- and like Mr. Cavenaugh, was doxed. Now, Mr. Cleary remained close to some in Anonymous and was indeed serving as a spokesperson for LulzSec. But reportedly he had nothing to do with the actual operations.
How convenient, it seems. The U.S. law enforcement is hungry to catch a LulzSec hacker and a low-ranking spokesperson who ran afoul of LulzSec's parent group (Anonymous) gets handed into their lap.
In the end it appears Scotland's "Topiary" met a similar fate as "Chippy1337" and "XYZ" -- arrested by authorities who were led down the wrong trail by the clever members of Anonymous and LulzSec.
Supporting evidence of this conclusion can be found in several videos [1][2][3] in which Topiary speaks in Swedish or with a Swedish accent (while a member of Anonymous). Given this and the chat logs, it appears that police have the wrong guy.
Of course, the possibility remains that the chat log comments were just misdirection. But there's too many clues pointing in the direction of Sweden to ignore that possibility, at this point.
